SFC Joseph Valentine Gyukery, 60, of Flaherty, KY passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017 at Hardin Memorial Hospital.
Sergeant First Class was born on February 14, 1957. He grew up in the small town of Seward, PA where he attended Laurel Valley High School. During his high school years, he participated in baseball, basketball, and football. Upon his graduation, SFC Gyukery attended Eastern Westmoreland Vocational Technical Institute, where he graduated with a 3.0 GPA in less than three years. On February 28, 1980, SFC Gyukery joined the United States Army as part of the armor branch. SFC Gyukery served two tours in Germany, one tour in Korea, and five tours in the Continental United States. For his dedicated commitment to serving his country, SFC Gyukery has earned the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Ribbon, NCO School Ribbon, The Army Drivers Badge, six Army Good Conduct Medals, Four Army Achievement Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, one Meritorious Service Medal, one Order of St. George Medal, and he was a Master Gunner. Some of his memberships include: St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Flaherty, KY, Harley Davidson Owners Group, and he was retired from Ford Motor Company where he was a member of UAW Local 862. Mr. Gyukery was an avid hunter, farmer, fisherman, and sports fanatic who coached many local sports in the Meade County area.
Survivors include: His wife of 33 years, Donna Gyukery; two children, Joshua Gyukery, Valerie Gyukery; his mother, Mary Baxendale; five siblings, John Mowery, Sharon Cochran & her husband, Ted, Dwaine Mowery & his wife, Norma, Debbie Robertson & her husband, Jamey, Marianne Gaydosh & her husband, Greg; and a host of family & friends.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM Saturday (There will be no visitation Sunday) and from 9:00 AM until 12:30 PM Monday at the Coffey & Chism Funeral Home, Vine Grove, KY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, June 19, 2017 at the St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Flaherty, KY. Burial will follow at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, Radcliff, KY with military honors.
